Civil Construction Plant · RIIMPO323E & RIIMPO324F
Dozer & Grader Courses Brisbane
Two separate tickets, 1–2 days each plus assessment, on real
machines at our Mansfield depot. The precision and volume machines for civil, roadworks and
mining sites.

Dozer and grader sit a step above the entry-level plant tickets, and the pay usually reflects that. A
dozer moves volume: clearing, stripping topsoil, pushing bulk material and cutting rough shape into a
site. A grader does the opposite job, taking that rough shape and trimming it to a tolerance a
surveyor will sign off on. Grader work in particular is one of the harder skills on a civil site and
good operators are consistently in demand across roadworks, subdivisions and mining.

The Decision
Dozer or grader?
They look like neighbours and they are not. The dozer is a volume machine and the grader is a
precision machine, and operators tend to be better at one than the other.
Dozer
Volume and force. Clearing, topsoil stripping, bulk push, ripping and building haul roads. The
skill sits in blade control, load management across a push, and reading ground so you are not
bogging or over-working the machine.
Grader
Precision and patience. Trimming to design levels, road base, camber and drainage falls, and
finishing surfaces to tolerance. It is the machine with the steepest learning curve on most
civil sites, and the one operators build a career on.
Worth knowing before you book: these courses are shorter than our entry-level plant units because they
assume you already have earthmoving experience behind you. If you have never operated plant at all,
start with skid steer and
excavator and come back to these.
Course Content
What each course covers
Planning and site reading
Interpreting pegs, marks, string lines and level information, identifying underground services
and overhead hazards, and assessing ground conditions and drainage before you cut.
Dozer operations
Blade types and control, push technique across a cut, ripping, stripping and stockpiling,
working on grade and slopes, and managing traction and machine load.
Grader operations
Mouldboard control, circle and blade positioning, cutting and spreading material, achieving
camber and crossfall, finish trimming to tolerance and working to survey marks.
Maintenance and shutdown
Pre-start and post-operation checks, track and undercarriage or tyre inspection, greasing and
operator-level upkeep, fault reporting, and safe park-up on grade.
How It Works
From booking to certification
Four stages, and the last one catches people out.
-
1
Book and confirm eligibility
Check the age and ID requirements above, then book online or call us. You will complete a
short
language, literacy and numeracy check before training so we can put the right support in
place.
-
2
Train and be assessed
Structured theory followed by seat time on the machine at our Mansfield depot, or at your
own
workplace if you can provide the plant. Assessment happens at the end of the course.
-
3
Receive your Statement of Attainment
On successful completion Great Heavy issues a nationally recognised Statement of
Attainment for
each unit you complete. A plastic industry wallet card can be issued on request.
-
4
Expect a site verification of competency
Your Statement of Attainment proves you have been trained and assessed. Most sites will
still run
their own verification of competency on their machines and conditions before you start.
That is
normal and it is not a second course.
This is the point most people get wrong, so it is worth being blunt about it. Civil construction plant
units are not high risk work licences. There is no class to apply for, no application
to
Workplace Health and Safety Queensland, and no card with an expiry date on it. What you receive is a
Statement of Attainment against a national unit of competency, which is recognised in every state and
territory and does not expire.
Forklifts are the exception. If you want to run a counterbalance forklift you need an LF class high risk
work licence, which is a different pathway with a WHSQ application at the end of it. That is covered on
our
forklift licence course page.
Flexibility
If you need more time
These are the two machines students most often ask for extra time on, particularly the grader. There
is no penalty for that and no rush to an assessment you are not ready for. We can arrange additional
practical sessions, extended learning time, one-on-one seat time with a trainer, alternative ways of
working through the theory, and recognition of prior learning if you already have hours up. Ask at
booking rather than on the day.
Cost
Dozer and grader course cost
$950 each
Dozer or grader: one to two days plus assessment, per machine.
On-site training
At your workplace, on your own machines.
$950 covers training, assessment and issue of your Statement of Attainment for that unit. On-site
training requires your employer to supply the machine and a suitable work area.
Feedback
What operators say
I can’t recommend Great Heavy Driving School enough. From day one Nav made me feel welcome
and
confident in my training. She was incredibly knowledgeable, patient and enthusiastic. Under her
guidance
I was able to pass my practical test on the first go and would be more than happy to return to
complete
other qualifications.
Operators building out a full plant set often come back for one more ticket once they are working. Our
roller course is a common next addition.
FAQ
Dozer and grader FAQs
These courses run shorter than our entry-level plant units because they assume some
earthmoving background. You do not need dozer or grader hours specifically, but if you
have never operated plant of any kind, talk to us first. Starting on a skid steer or
excavator will make far better use of your money.
No. You receive a Statement of Attainment for RIIMPO323E, RIIMPO324F or both. These are
civil construction units of competency, not high risk work licences. There is no WHSQ
application and nothing that expires.
Because the tolerance is tighter. A dozer needs to move material efficiently. A grader
needs to leave a surface at the right level, camber and finish, often within
millimetres, and that takes seat time to build. Most operators need more practice on
the grader, which is why we would rather you asked for extra sessions than rushed the
assessment.
Yes, at $950 each. Let us know at booking and we will schedule them together where
dates allow.
Two forms of identification, steel-capped or safety boots, long sleeves and long
pants, and sun protection. Bring water.
The Statement of Attainment is the nationally recognised evidence of training and
assessment that sites ask for. Mining and major civil sites will then run their own
verification of competency and site induction on top, which is standard and
expected.
Location
Where training runs
All practical training and assessment runs at our Mansfield depot, 359 Wecker Road, Mansfield QLD 4122,
about 20 minutes from the Brisbane CBD with on-site parking. On-site training at your own workplace is
