An LR licence is the first step past a car licence, and it opens up more work than most people expect: small delivery trucks, tippers, tilt trays, 25 seat buses, larger motorhomes and plenty of trade vehicles that tip over 4.5 tonnes once they’re loaded. If you’ve held your car licence for a year, you’re already eligible.

Great Heavy Driving School trains and tests you for it in Brisbane, and books both of your Transport and Main Roads tests on your behalf so you’re not queuing at a customer service centre working out which form you need.

What an LR licence lets you drive

An LR licence covers a truck or bus up to 8 tonnes GVM, including a prime mover or a mobile crane at that weight. You can also tow a trailer up to 9 tonnes GVM. Everything your car licence already allowed stays included.

Where your car licence stops

The practical line is 4.5 tonnes. That’s where a car licence stops, so anything above it and up to 8 tonnes needs an LR. This catches out more tradespeople than you’d think, because a ute or truck that sits under 4.5 tonnes empty can easily go over it loaded, and the GVM on the compliance plate is what counts, not what the vehicle happens to weigh on the day.

Are you eligible?

You need

A valid Australian car (class C) licence held for at least 12 months. Provisional counts.
Secondary identification
Fully enclosed footwear for training, boots or runners
A functional level of English, since all training and assessment is conducted in English
To declare you’re medically fit to drive the higher class. If you have a medical condition that could affect your driving, TMR will require a medical certificate from your doctor before you can upgrade.

The five-year rule

One thing worth knowing that catches people out: the 12 months has to fall within the last five years, and it doesn’t have to be continuous. TMR will add up separate periods. What it won’t count is any time your licence was suspended, surrendered, cancelled or expired.

If you’ve had a break in your licence history, check with us before you book so you’re not paying for a test you can’t sit.

The Process

How it works

Confirm you’re eligible and book. Give us a call or book online. We’ll check your licence history and current class against the requirements before you pay for anything.
Pass the TMR road rules knowledge test. Upgrading from a car licence means sitting a written road rules test with Transport and Main Roads. We book this on your behalf as part of the Full Package. There’s a free practice test you can work through beforehand and we’d recommend doing it more than once.
Complete your driving lessons. Two hours behind the wheel with an instructor at our Mansfield depot, in our truck. We cover vehicle checks, controls, road positioning, turning and clearances, reversing, and the observation habits the testing officer is actually watching for. If you need more time, additional hours are $100 each and there’s no pressure to sit the test before you’re ready.
Sit the practical driving test. We book this for you and you sit it in a vehicle you’ve already trained in, which removes a lot of the guesswork. Pass and TMR reissues your licence with the LR class added. The new card arrives in the post within about 21 days, and heavy vehicle licences are issued as a magenta card showing the highest class you’re authorised to drive.

You don’t receive a certificate, a Statement of Attainment or an industry wallet card from us for this. An LR licence is a driver licence class, and TMR issues it.

Read This Before You Test

Automatic or manual: the condition that follows you

This is the decision most people don’t realise they’re making until it’s on their licence.

If you sit your practical test in an automatic, TMR adds an automatic (A) condition to your LR class. From then on you can only drive automatic LR vehicles, and driving a manual one puts you outside your licence. Sit the test in a manual and there’s no condition at all.

Two things worth knowing

The A condition doesn’t necessarily apply to every class on your licence. If you already drive a manual car and pick up an A condition on your LR, you keep driving manual cars.
You can remove it later, but it means going back and passing another practical driving test in a manual vehicle of that class. It’s cheaper to sit the right test the first time.

If you’re not confident in a manual, tell us at booking rather than defaulting to the automatic. Extra hours cost less than a second test. See TMR’s page on licence classes and conditions for the full detail on conditions like this one.

Caution — the penalty is real

If you’re planning to get extra practice in someone else’s truck between lessons, there are rules and the penalty is real.

While learning to drive a class above your current licence, you must:

Be accompanied by a supervisor who holds an open licence in that class and has held it for at least a year
Display L plates on the front and rear of the vehicle
Stay on a zero alcohol limit
Not be under the influence of any drugs, illegal or prescription

Driving unaccompanied while learning a higher class carries 4 demerit points and a $267 fine, with a maximum court penalty over $3,300.

Worth noting: if your car licence is automatic only, you’re still permitted to learn to drive a manual vehicle of the same or a higher class under supervision.

Where an LR licence leads

LR isn’t a dead end, but the upgrade path isn’t the one people assume.

LR to HR after holding your LR for 12 months. This is the standard next step, and it skips MR entirely.
HR to HC after another 12 months.
HC to MC after another 12 months, for B-doubles and road trains.

If your goal is HC or MC, LR is a legitimate starting point but it’s a longer road than going straight for HR, which you can do 2 years after getting your car licence. Talk to us about which route suits your timeline before you commit.

No. Most people who book an LR have never driven anything bigger than a ute. The two hours starts with the basics and your instructor won’t put you into anything you’re not ready for.

That depends mostly on test availability rather than training. The two hours of driving can often be done in a single session. The knowledge test and practical test are both booked with TMR, so the timeline is set by their schedule. Call us and we’ll give you a realistic date.

Not automatically. You do have to declare you’re medically fit to drive the class. If you have a condition that could affect your driving, TMR will want a medical certificate from your doctor before the upgrade goes through.

You rebook it. Additional training is available at $100 per hour if you want more time first, and your instructor will tell you honestly what went wrong. Failing a test is common and it isn’t the end of anything.

Yes. Australian driver licence classes are recognised nationally.

No, and it’s worth being clear about it because it’s a common mix-up. An LR is a driver licence class that TMR adds to your existing licence. There’s no Statement of Attainment and no wallet card. Our plant courses like forklift and excavator work differently.

The licence class covers the vehicle, but carrying passengers commercially can require a driver authorisation from TMR on top of it. Check what your employer needs before you book.

Often, yes. Many ambulances are built on a truck chassis that pushes the fitted-out vehicle over 4.5 tonnes GVM, which puts it outside a standard car licence and into LR territory. Ambulance services generally require crews driving these vehicles to hold at least an LR licence. If you’re applying for a paramedic or ambulance officer role, check the exact licence class your employer requires before you book.

If there’s any chance you’ll drive a manual LR vehicle, test in a manual. An automatic test puts an A condition on your licence, and removing it later means another practical test.
