A forklift licence opens up warehousing, distribution, freight, manufacturing and retail roles right across Brisbane — anywhere stock moves on pallets. What a forklift licence actually is in Queensland
Most plant machinery tickets in Queensland are Statements of Attainment against a national unit. The forklift is different. It is a genuine High Risk Work Licence — LF class — issued by Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ) and recognised in every Australian state and territory.
The training and assessment sit under the national unit TLILIC0003 (Licence to operate a forklift). Passing gives you a Statement of Attainment from Great Heavy Driving School (RTO 45132) and a Candidate Assessment Summary from your accredited assessor. You then apply to WHSQ for the licence itself.
Entry requirements are straightforward. You need to be at least 18, and you need sufficient English language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) to complete the theory and assessment. You do not need a driver's licence or a medical examination to sit the course.
One thing worth knowing before you start applying for work: an LF ticket covers the counterbalance forklift, which is the standard machine across warehousing, construction and industrial sites. It does not cover an order picker, which is a separate LO class licence, or a telehandler, which is a different ticket again. Pedestrian equipment such as walkie stackers and pallet jacks does not require a High Risk Work Licence at all.
The jobs a forklift licence gets you in Brisbane
Warehousing and distribution
This is the largest single employer of ticketed forklift operators in Brisbane. Distribution centres and third-party logistics warehouses through Logan, Ipswich and the eastern industrial belt around Cannon Hill run forklifts across every shift, moving inbound pallets to racking and picking outbound orders for despatch.
Roles are usually advertised as storeperson, warehouse operator or despatch hand rather than "forklift driver." The ticket is the qualifier that gets your application read.
Freight, transport and logistics yards
Freight depots and transport yards need operators who can unload and load trailers quickly and safely. The work is a step up in pace from general warehousing and often runs across early morning or evening shifts to match linehaul schedules.
This category also covers container unpacking and pallet consolidation work through Brisbane's eastern freight corridor around Wynnum and Cannon Hill.
Manufacturing and production
Manufacturing sites use forklifts to feed raw material to production lines and move finished goods to storage. Operators here often hold a production or process role as well, with forklift duties forming part of a broader job rather than the whole of it. That makes the ticket a useful add-on for workers already employed in production who want more responsibility.
Retail, hardware and building supplies
Hardware chains, timber yards, landscaping supply yards and building material suppliers across Brisbane all run forklifts in their trade and yard areas. Loading customer utes and trailers, unloading deliveries and moving stock around the yard is daily work.
These roles suit operators who are comfortable working with the public, and they are often a solid entry point for someone who has just been ticketed.
Construction and civil sites
Construction sites use forklifts for materials handling, though on rougher ground the machine is often a telehandler rather than a counterbalance forklift. Check the job ad. If a site is specifically after a telehandler operator, an LF ticket alone will not cover it.

The tickets employers commonly want alongside a forklift licence
A forklift licence on its own gets you into warehousing. Pairing it with one or two related tickets widens the field considerably.
White Card (CPCWHS1001). Mandatory for anyone working on an Australian construction site. If any part of the work you are chasing happens on a building or civil site, you need one. Our White Card course is a single face-to-face day at the Mansfield depot, with the Queensland White Card issued the same day.
A truck licence. Plenty of delivery roles ask the driver to unload at the other end, which means a truck licence and a forklift ticket in the same person. A Medium Rigid (MR) licence is the common pairing for local freight and trade delivery work in Brisbane.
Skid steer or excavator competency. For operators aiming at civil construction rather than warehousing, a machinery ticket alongside the forklift makes you useful on a wider range of sites.
Keeping your ticket current: the five-year cycle
A forklift licence is not a one-and-done qualification, and this catches people out.
Once you pass your assessment, you have 60 days to lodge your licence application with WHSQ. Leave it longer and your assessment result no longer supports the application. To apply you will need a Queensland Digital Identity and a customer reference number (CRN) from a Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) issued card — a driver licence, learner permit or proof of age card will do. An application fee applies, paid directly to WHSQ.
You can work while the application is being processed. Keep your Candidate Assessment Summary and your proof of payment as evidence that you are operating lawfully in the interim.

Getting your forklift licence in Brisbane
Training runs over three days at our Mansfield depot at 359 Wecker Road — two days of training followed by a day of assessment. All practical work is delivered on a counterbalance forklift, and every assessment is run by accredited assessors.
Course content covers load handling, stability principles, pre-start inspections, hazard identification, workplace safety, risk management and equipment maintenance. It is structured for people with no previous forklift experience, so you are not expected to arrive knowing anything.
On-site delivery is available where an employer supplies the machinery and a safe working area. That is a practical option for getting a whole team ticketed on the equipment they already use, rather than sending people out one at a time.
The depot is open seven days, 7:00am to 5:00pm, which makes it workable around existing shifts.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a driver's licence to get a forklift ticket in Queensland?
Not for the course itself. Training and assessment require no driver's licence and no medical examination. You will need a customer reference number from a TMR-issued card when you lodge your WHSQ licence application afterwards, which can come from a proof of age card if you do not drive.
How long does a forklift licence last?
Five years. Renewal is handled online through Workplace Health and Safety Queensland. If your ticket has lapsed, a refresher course is usually the appropriate path rather than repeating the full three-day program.
What jobs can I apply for straight after passing?
Warehouse and storeperson roles, despatch and freight handling, production support in manufacturing, and yard work at hardware and building supply businesses. Distribution centres are the highest-volume employer of ticketed operators in Brisbane.
Does an LF licence cover an order picker or a telehandler?
No. An order picker requires a separate LO class licence, and a telehandler is a different ticket again. Your LF licence covers the counterbalance forklift, which is the machine most warehouse and industrial roles are built around.
Is a Queensland forklift licence recognised in other states?
Yes. High Risk Work Licences are issued under a national framework, so an LF licence obtained in Queensland is recognised in every Australian state and territory.
Do I need a White Card as well as a forklift licence?
Only if you will be working on a construction site. Warehousing, freight and manufacturing roles generally do not require one. If construction work is on your list, the White Card is a mandatory single-day course and is worth doing at the same time.
