Frequently Asked Questions

On successful completion, you receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment. This is the qualification you use to apply for your High Risk Work Licence (LF class), issued by Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ). The LF licence authorises you to operate a forklift commercially across Queensland and is recognised nationally. An industry wallet card is also available on request.

No previous forklift experience is required. The course is designed for complete beginners as well as those who have operated a forklift informally and want to formalise their competency. You do need to be at least 18 years of age and have sufficient English language, literacy and numeracy to participate in training and complete the written components of the assessment.

The course runs over three days in total: two days of training followed by one day of formal assessment. Both training and assessment are conducted at our Mansfield depot in Brisbane. On-site delivery is available for employers, provided the business can supply a forklift and safe working area for the duration of the course.

The assessment covers both practical operation and theoretical knowledge. You will be observed operating the forklift in a range of tasks — including load handling, stacking, de-stacking and safe manoeuvring — and assessed on your understanding of pre-start inspections, hazard identification and workplace safety obligations. Our instructors are accredited assessors, so training and assessment are delivered without any handoff to a third party.

Training is conducted on a counterbalance forklift at our Mansfield depot. This is the most common forklift type used across warehousing, construction and industrial worksites. The skills and assessment outcomes from the course apply to LF class High Risk Work Licences, which cover counterbalance forklifts. If your workplace uses a different forklift type, speak to us before enrolling to confirm suitability.

Yes. The High Risk Work Licence (LF class) is issued by Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ) and is recognised across all Australian states and territories under mutual recognition arrangements. If you move interstate or work on a job that crosses state lines, your Queensland licence remains valid. The Statement of Attainment underpinning the licence is also nationally recognised.

Yes. We offer on-site forklift training for businesses wanting to train their workforce at their own premises. To arrange on-site delivery, the employer needs to provide a suitable forklift and a safe working area for practical training and assessment. Contact our team on (07) 3067 5556 to discuss your requirements and available dates.

You will need to bring valid photo identification and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) — including steel-capped boots — for the practical component of the course. You will also need a current Unique Student Identifier (USI) number, which is required for the issue of your Statement of Attainment. If you do not yet have a USI, you can create one for free at usi.gov.au before your course date.

Yes. Great Heavy Driving School offers a Forklift Refresher Course for operators who hold an existing forklift licence and want to refresh their skills and knowledge. The refresher is shorter in duration than the full course and is suited to operators returning to forklift work after a break, or workplaces that require periodic competency updates. See our Forklift Refresher page for details.

You can book directly through our website by viewing upcoming course dates, or call our team on (07) 3067 5556 to discuss availability. We operate seven days a week from 7:00am to 5:00pm, so you can reach us at a time that suits you. On-site training enquiries are best handled by phone so we can confirm your workplace setup before confirming a booking.
