With a focus on Australian road safety standards, this course prepares you for the responsibilities of operating a Light Rigid truck in various environments.

Light Rigid Licence Course Information

The process for getting your Light Rigid (LR) Truck Licence includes: 

  1. Complete the written knowledge test. Great Heavy Driving School will book this on your behalf as part of the Full Package. You can complete the practice test here: Practice Road Rules Test 
  2. Complete driving lessons with Great Heavy Driving School 
  3. Complete your Light Rigid (LR) Practical Driving Test. Great Heavy Driving School will book this on your behalf as part of the Full Package. 

  • A valid Australian Car Driver Licence that has been held for a minimum of 12 months 
  • Secondary identification 
  • Wear appropriate clothing, including with completely enclosed boots or runners. 
  • English is the only language used for training and assessment; a functional level of English language comprehension is necessary.

  • A mid-week practical driving test booking fee of $70 
  • A mandatory written knowledge test $27.75

CONFIRM ELIGIBILITY & BOOK YOUR COURSE

Ensure you're 17 or older, proficient in English, and ready for hands-on training. Then, secure your spot by booking online or contacting us directly.

COMPLETE TRAINING & ASSESSMENT

Attend both classroom sessions and practical training at our Brisbane facility or request on-site training. At the end, you’ll complete a practical assessment.

03

RECEIVE CERTIFICATION

Upon successful completion, you'll receive a Statement of Attainment for your course and can request a plastic industry wallet card.

Light Rigid Licence Course FAQs

No previous heavy vehicle experience is required. The training is designed for new drivers and begins with the fundamentals before progressing to on-road driving. Your trainer will guide you through each stage so you understand what to do and why you’re doing it before moving forward.

The course length depends on your ability and confidence. Some participants are ready sooner, while others need more time behind the wheel. The trainer works at your pace and will only move to assessment once you are comfortable operating the vehicle safely.

You will complete a practical driving assessment where you demonstrate safe vehicle control, road positioning, observation, and hazard awareness. The assessment reflects real driving conditions so you are prepared for everyday truck operation, not just the test itself.

After successfully completing the assessment, you will be issued the documentation required to upgrade your licence to LR through the relevant licensing authority. Your trainer will explain the next steps so you know exactly what to do after training.
